Long before he became known for web design, illustration, comic books, and entrepreneurship, Eli Nicolosi spent years immersed in the independent music scene as a songwriter, performer, and founding member of The Memories.
Formed during the early 2000s, The Memories brought together a group of musicians who shared a passion for original music and the thriving Midwest indie rock culture of the era. The band’s lineup included Eli Nicolosi, Joe Dizillo, Eric D’Asto, and Brian VandenBos, each bringing unique influences and creative energy to the group.
At the time…
At the time, independent music was flourishing throughout both Chicago and Rockford. Local bands relied heavily on word of mouth, college radio, independent record stores, and live performances to build audiences. The Memories embraced that spirit, writing original songs and performing throughout the region while developing a sound rooted in alternative rock, melodic songwriting, and independent creativity.
For Nicolosi, songwriting was never simply about creating music. It was a way to tell stories, communicate ideas, and connect with audiences. Looking back, many of the themes that would later appear in his illustration work, creative businesses, and comic book projects were already present in the songs he was writing during those years.
“The music scene taught me how to create something from nothing,” Nicolosi has often reflected. “Whether you’re writing a song, designing a website, or creating a comic book, you’re ultimately trying to tell a story that resonates with people.”
Like many independent bands of the era, The Memories spent countless hours rehearsing, recording demos, promoting shows, and building relationships with other musicians throughout Northern Illinois and the Chicago area. Those experiences created lasting friendships and helped shape the creative paths that many of the band members would later pursue.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was the collaboration itself. Songwriting is often viewed as an individual pursuit, but bands thrive when talented people contribute ideas, challenge each other creatively, and work toward a common vision. The Memories benefited from that collaborative spirit, allowing each member to help shape the band’s sound and identity.
Today…
Today, Nicolosi is best known as the founder of Astute Web Group and the creator of the independent science fiction comic series Overdrive. Yet the lessons learned from years spent writing songs and performing live continue to influence his creative process.
Music teaches discipline. It teaches persistence. It teaches how to communicate emotion and ideas in ways that connect with audiences. Those same principles apply whether creating a website, designing a logo, illustrating a character, or building an entirely new fictional universe.
The Midwest music scene has evolved significantly since the days when The Memories were performing throughout the region, but the memories remain strong. For Nicolosi and his former bandmates, those years represent a unique chapter filled with creativity, friendship, and artistic growth.
Looking back, The Memories serves as more than just a band name. It represents an important period in the lives of a group of musicians who came together simply because they loved creating original music. While their careers and interests may have taken different directions over the years, the creative foundation built during those early days continues to influence their work today.
